Baptisms for Infants & Young Children
Parents who wish to have their child baptized at Holy Redeemer are encouraged to contact the parish office a few months in advance to schedule the baptism and begin preparing for this Sacrament.
First-time parents or parents who haven’t previously attended a baptism preparation course are asked to complete this course. This meeting is with Rev. Gerald Andrews, the Director of Religious Education, and is typically done a month before the scheduled baptism date.
Baptisms for Older Children
Holy Redeemer welcomes children who are in grades 2nd and above to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) program, where preparation for this Sacrament is completed as a family. These children learn about the foundational teachings of our faith through RCIC and it culminating at the Easter Vigil, where they receive the Sacrament of Baptism.
Baptisms for Adults
Holy Redeemer offers the Sacrament of Baptism for adults through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, where those who are to be baptized receive formation and instruction on the Catholic faith.
Godparents
Godparents are truly seen as guardians, after the parents, of the beautiful gift of faith and its growth in the life of the person who is to be baptized. Godparents not only play an important role during the Sacrament of Baptism, but throughout their Godchild’s life. The Church asks that at least one Godparent is a fully initiated Catholic (received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation), is 16 years of age or older, follow’s the teachings of the Church and is active in their faith. Godparents who fulfill these requirements are asked to complete a Godparent Form.
The Sacrament of Baptism for infants and young children is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of every month at 1:00 p.m.
Adults and youth are typically received into the Church through the Sacrament of Baptism at the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil after at least a year of preparation theough the Rite of Christian Initiation.
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried, therefore, with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6:3-4
“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.’”
