Lectors respond to the Lord's call as a reader of Holy Scripture at Mass. The lector in the celebration of the sacred liturgy has been authorized primarily to do the Scripture readings before the Gospel. He/she also presents the prayer of the worshiping community and reads announcements, as needed.
Lectors serve at the discretion and with the permission of the pastor and after they have volunteered in other parish ministries and been involved in other areas of parish life.
If you are interested in becoming a lector at Holy Redeemer Parish, please fill out the form below. Our Lector Trainer, Mrs. Micki Freeny will contact you to set up a time for training after you have met with and been interviewed by our pastor.
Responsibilities of Holy Redeemer Lectors:
It is an ancient teaching in the Church that Christ is truly present in His Word: the Word that is spoken, heard, and acted upon. A willingness to study the Scriptures and the time to pray with the readings before each liturgical assignment are necessary commitments for a Lector. The degree and kind of relationship that you establish with the Word is the wellspring of your service.
The ministry of Lector is a charism for the building up of the community, and it does require some natural abilities such as confidence, poise, and sensitivity to the assembly. Reading skills, the ability to develop proclamation techniques and a clear and steady voice are attributes of a Lector.
The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I may know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.
Isaiah 50: 4
